Volunteers help lower-income residents file taxes

AARP Volunteers provide tax assistance. [AARP Foundation]

Need help filing your income tax forms? Volunteers with the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program are providing free walk-in tax assistance to low to moderate-income people at the Mason Government Center

Tax Aide volunteers will be there 1-8 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays; 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays. The last day is April 18, which is the federal tax deadline this year. State taxes are due May 1.

All returns will be filed electronically. Taxpayers need to bring relevant documents, such as last year’s tax return, a photo ID, and Social Security cards for themselves and their dependents.

Tax Aide volunteers will make home visits to residents with illnesses or disabilities. To schedule an appointment, call 703-594-6576.

There’s also a Tax Aide location at the James Lee Community Center (2855 Annandale Road, Falls Church, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-4 p.m.)

In other tax news, lower-income Fairfax County residents who are 65 or older or have disabilities might qualify for property tax relief.

Mason Supervisor Penny Gross is hosting two workshops, March 8 and 10, 9 a.m.-noon, at the Mason Government Center to help people apply for tax relief. No appointment is necessary.

Participants should bring their 2016 tax returns or proof of 2016 gross income from all sources and all asset information as of Dec. 31, 2016.

  1. I very much appreciate this service.Saves me upwards of
over $200.00 +( the fee I would have had to pay someone)money that I could put towards things needed, bills etc. They do a good job and the best part is that when your tax preparer is done, then a head Tax Aide goes over them to make sure that everything has been done right and information has been entered correctly .The head Tax Aide this time caught something my first preparer had missed.2 heads are better than one It's a great service and very much appreciated.Thank you AARP Volunteers!!!
