Aldi grocery store coming to Annandale

Four and a-half years after the Bloom store at 7000 Columbia Pike closed, Aldi has agreed to lease the space. An Aldi grocery store is expected to open in that spot some time next year, says Colleen Baker, a spokesperson for the company.
“We’re excited to join the community and to be able to bring residents high-quality groceries at everyday low prices,” says Jeff Baehr, vice president of the Aldi division based in Frederick, Md.
The fast-growing Aldi chain, founded in Germany in 1961, has more than 1,500 stores in the United States and expects to have nearly 2,000 by 2018. The stores feature a “no-frills shopping experience,” the company’s website states. Many of the store’s products carry unfamiliar brand names.
Another Aldi store is under construction in the 4800 block of Duke Street, Alexandria, across from the Shoppes at Foxchase on the site of Tres Hermanas restaurant. There are two other Aldi’s in Alexandria, one on Lee Highway in Fairfax, and one on Backlick Road in Springfield.
The Bloom grocery store opened in January 2012 and closed two years
later. Before that, the space sat empty for several years after a
Magruder’s grocery store closed.

Uh, oh. A no frills warehouse that's store brand-centric is a risky play in a community with Giant and Safeway stores that have successfully fended off the competition for decades. I was hoping more for a place with a unique niche identity like TJ's. I wish these guys luck, but they'll have to offer me some serious savings to shop there.
Aldi and TJs are under the same company. In fact Aldi Nord owns Trader Joes and few people know it. You can find TJs products in Aldis across Europe.
Aldi is unique in that the value is pretty much unbeatable. Their buyers do a great job with the seasonal/ rotating household products. There's no other grocery stores like it. It's like they took a mom and pop store and scaled it up, taking advantage of discount pricing/ buying. It's a game changer and a life saver for those of us in the lower income brackets. PS…no, I don't work for Aldi…just a grateful fan.
Aldi and TJs are NOT the same company. Aldi Nord operates Trader Joe's, and Aldi _Sud_ operates the American Aldi brand.
Those two companies are separate, but the owners are brothers.
I love Aldi's. It by no means will replace Giant or Safeway but you can get so many great deals there, especially stuff like frozen veggies. Between Lotte for fresh produce and Aldi's you can save a bundle. I got a package of strawberries for .79 at Lotte today.

Every time I've driven by that empty Bloom store I thought, They ought to put an Aldi's there! I guess I'm pretty much a genius!

Based on what I've read here and elsewhere, I'm leery, but in the name of supporting local business and variety, I'll at least give it a try.
I still remember (barely) when my mom and I would shop at the A & P grocery store that used to occupy that space.
We used to bring the wagon to A&P with our bottle collection and then spend the $ on the 25 cent Hershey bar.
Whoa; I do remember something about bottle recycling back in the day….thanks for jogging my memory. Want to sit out on the porch in a rocking chair and knit gaudy, scratchy sweaters with me? 😉

YESS!! One of my favorite stores. Glad to have one down the street!
Just about anything is better than vacancy. I liked having a grocery store there as it was a quicker trip than Giant or HT when I was out of essentials. Will be happy to have one back.
I missed Magruaders and Bloom. Being of a certain age, I hate the large stores. Giant used to have two smaller stores, Yorktowne and Heritage but they closed both of them in favor of mega stores. I look forward to trying Aldi!
WOW another Aldi's and one more being built on Duke St. There is one off 395 just off Seminary heading East by the Medical building on the left. Don't forget, there is a TJs at Bailey's Crossroads by the Best Buys.

Also, the article mentions that The Annandale Treasure Trove is currently using this space for furniture sales. It’s been open every weekend since Memorial Day, but obviously that will be coming to an end. There is a silver lining, all that furniture must go, so expect amazing sales. (Currently 30% furniture and more) Don’t miss this opportunity to buy some beautiful pieces of furniture (some antique, lots of vintage) usually 75% less than retail!

This is fantastic news. I have e-mailed Aldi twice about using that store, and twice got a polite brush off. I'd like to think my contact made a difference, but probably not.
The only better operation for this location would be a Sharp Shopper store, which is similar to (but better than) Aldi. Sharp Shopper is a Pennsylvania-based chain and the nearest store I know about is in Winchester, VA. I've been there several times and loved it. I contacted Sharp Shopper about the empty Bloom store and got a polite brush off as well. But I'm absolutely delighted that Aldi will move in.
My dad emailed them a few times as well.
I would venture to say this will be a success. Aldi has a great track record and offers a unique experience. Some amazing deals! Glad to see this.
This is great news for people in Broyhill Crest who would like to "age in place" and be able to walk to a grocery store without having to cross Columbia Pike or Annandale Road.
Am I the only one that remembers the Jumbo supermarket that was next to Kmart before they expanded. It was between Kmart and Tom Westins.
I remember the Shopper's Food Warehouse. Man, when I graduated from college, I was so grateful for that place!
I remember the Jumbo store. I didn't care for it. It always seemed dirty and messy. I did love one that was near College Park Maryland. Went to that one for years while visiting my
grandparents.
Oh wow this is a huge disappointment. I really dislike that store. We had one near my house in Holland. It's just a warehouse of processed, package food and the stores feel kinda grubby. Untidy, crowded, like a rundown warehouse. And the really cheap junk from China. Geeze. My father in law is always buying stuff from there in Australia that breaks a month later. Lidl is also coming to the US, and are based in Arlington. It's a much, much better store. Wish they had nabbed that space.
No more driving to Springfield or Fairfax. Great prices for milk, eggs, cheese and canned goods. They have the best potato chips, and oh so many gluten free products. Do you think I'm excited?
I contacted Lidl corporate HQ (in Arlington) and tried to interest them in this property. I actually got a thoughtful reply explaining that they wanted a larger plot of land for their new stores.
So as a consolation, I am thrilled that this location will work for Aldi. Aldi discounts are at least as good as Costco or BJs, but you don't have to buy enormous quantities. Sometimes I can't believe how many Aldi products I walk out with, and still stay way under $100. They have good fresh produce and meats, and occasionally authentic German foods. Try an Aldi fresh pizza for 5 or 6 bucks — you'll be very pleasantly surprised. With this nearby Aldi so close, I will go every other day for fresh food. It will also be interesting to see how they fill the space — Aldi seems to be moving to larger venues as they compete with the main line stores and soon Lidl.
Will save me a trip to Springfield. We go there mostly for milk, bread, chicken, eggs, etc. Also is a bargain . Giant will not be happy
