Allen, Perkins, Moran ace primaries
There were no big surprises in the results of the Virginia
primary Tuesday. In the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, former Virginia
Gov. George Allen easily won the chance to go up against former Democratic governor
Tim Kaine in November.

They are vying for the open seat left by Sen. Jim Webb (D),
who is not running for re-election. Allen was elected to the Senate in 2000 and lost his re-election bid to Webb in 2006.
Allen got 65 percent of the
statewide vote, compared to 23 percent for Tea Party leader Jamie Radke, 7
percent for Del. R.G. “Bob” Marshall of Prince William County, and 5 percent
for E.W. Jackson. Allen did even better in Fairfax County, capturing 71 percent
of the vote. Turnout was light—just 5 percent statewide and 4 percent in
Fairfax County.

In the Democratic primary for the 8th congressional
district, the incumbent, Rep. Jim Moran got 74 percent of the vote, beating
challenger Bruce Shuttleworth. Turnout was about 6 percent.
