Annandale comes together to wrap gifts for seniors

“Elvis” made it a party.

Dozens of volunteers sorted and wrapped over 2,000 holiday
gifts for residents of senior living facilities Dec. 18. The annual event gift-wrapping party sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care of Annandale took place at the Annandale Fire Station’s Ossian Hall.

And it was a party, with entertainment by Elvis tribute artist Lionel Ward and food donated by Magill’s Restaurant, Dominos Pizza, Chik-fil-A,
and Giant.

Local residents shopped for the gifts after selecting the
names of seniors at several participating stores, including the Juke
Box Diner
in central Annandale, Smith
& Clarkson Deli
in the Ravensworth Shopping Center, and  Curves for
Women at the Barcroft Shopping Center.

The gifts will be distributed Dec. 21 to the Lincolnia Senior Apartments, Golden Living Center/Sleepy
Hollow Manor
, Morris
Glen
, Commonwealth, and Mount Vernon House. Gifts included pajamas,
toiletries, blankets, puzzles books, socks, bathrobes, art supplies, and much more.

Ward livened things
up with Elvis songs and classic rock from other artists. He had been in a rock
and roll show band in Germany years ago when he took on the Elvis role and he’s
been traveling the world as Elvis ever since. He met his wife, Barbie, at an
Elvis concert more than 30 years ago, and their home in Burke is full of
Elvis-related items fans had given him.Ward has some
20 Elvis outfits, made by B&K Enterprises, the same company that made Elvis’s
outfits during his Las Vegas period. Each one is custom fit, full of glitz, and
costs $2,000 to $7,000.
