Annandale firefighters inspecting residents’ smoke detectors

Firefighters from Annandale Fire Station #8 on Columbia Pike
were out knocking on residents’ doors on Saturday checking to see if resident
have working smoke detectors. If they don’t, the firefighters give them a new
smoke detector or batteries free of charge.

These door-to-door safety checks are going on all over the
county every Saturday from March through the end of April – unless there’s a
fire or other emergency, says Capt. Ralph Pisani of Station 8. The smoke detector inspections are a fire prevention priority
of Fairfax County Fire Chief Richard Bowers.

Pisani says his goal is to contact everyone in Annandale,
although that could take years.

The crew also does safety inspections if
requested by a volunteer. “We look for things like blocked exits and unsafe
extension cords. Clutter can be a hindrance if people are trying to get out,” he
 says.
