Annandale park showcases music of Colombia
Vanessa Lozano and Ricardo Herrera, both originally from Bogota, Colombia, perform at Ossian Hall Park. |
The music and dance of Colombia was on display at Ossian Hall Park in Annandale Saturday evening. The band Confonica played traditional music from the Andes and Pacific and Atlantic coasts, and members of the El Tayrona dance group performed several Colombian dances, including the sanjuanero, bambuca, and la cumbia.
The show was part of the Spotlight by Starlight summer concert series. There is only one more show left this summer at Ossian Hall Park: Russian Heritage Night on Aug. 27, 7:30 p.m., featuring the Beltway Balalaikas.
There will be several more Spotlight by Starlight shows at Mason District Park: The Thrillbillys (rockabilly) on Aug. 24; Gallagher, Stang, Lewis and Bullock with Eddie Harness (acoustic rock) on Aug. 26; the Hokum Jazz Band on Aug. 28; and Dangermuffin (Americana/soul) on Aug. 31. All those concerts start at 7:30 p.m.
At the Aug. 20 show, Frank Vajda, the Mason District representative on the Fairfax County Park Authority Board, encouraged members of the audience to contribute to the summer concert series, noting that the shows are entirely supported by sponsors and donors and not tax dollars.
“Without community support we will not be able to continue these wonderful performance,” Vajda said. Donations can be made through the Fairfax County Park Foundation.
We are so lucky to have these are such awesome (and FREE) programs right in our neighborhood. Many of us can even walk to the venues. When my kids were little we'd take a picnic supper & sit on the lawn. If the kids got restless, no problem–there's plenty of room to run around. You'll want to bring a folding or umbrella chair to Ossian Hall park, maybe a pillow for the benches at Mason District's amphitheater.
