Annandale Safeway gets a makeover

The Safeway on Little River Turnpike has a fresh, new look.

The Annandale Safeway celebrated a grand reopening on March 14 following an extensive remodeling.

The store, at 7414 Little River Turnpike, has an upgraded and expanded produce section with more organic fruit and vegetables.

The bakery, seafood, and floral departments have been expanded. There are more hot, prepared items and pre-made sandwiches, and the entire store layout has been reconfigured.

More options at the deli area.

During the reopening event, Safeway officials announced the donation of $1,000 to Fairfax County Public Schools. Lisa Youngblood Hall, chief experience and engagement officer at FCPS, said the funds will be distributed in the form of gift cards to local schools.

Another $1,000 was presented to Food for Others a food bank that helps families experiencing food insecurity.

The Annandale Safeway also has new checkout stations, an upgraded self-checkout area, and an enhanced curbside pickup area.

To cut down on shoplifting, more items – including detergent, selfcare products, and over-the-counter medications – are kept in locked cases. The security camera system has also been upgraded.

Due to the bird flu epidemic, egg prices are soaring across the country, and Safeway is no exception. A crate of 12 extra large “certified humane” eggs from Pete & Gerry’s was priced at $8.29 on March 14. Free-range medium Heirloom eggs are $6.99. Large cage-free eggs from Open Nature are $6.49.

Customers need to get an employee to unlock these items.

Safeway is responding to increased demand for online shopping, said Jonathan Cruz, vice president of operations for the Mid-Atlantic Division of Albertsons, Safeway’s parent company. Safeway also recognizes e-shopping is not for everyone. Del. Vivian Watts said she appreciates the experience of shopping in person and selecting her own produce.

“For many families, a grocery store isn’t just a place to shop. It’s a community hub,” said Mason District Supervisor Andres Jimenez.

“This is a place where neighbors run into each other, where workers build relationships with customers, and essential goods are accessible to all,” Jimenez said. “This renovation represents a commitment to Annandale.”

Plushies are available for Easter.

  1. Is the new atmosphere going to include higher employee satisfaction?

I tend to avoid Annandale Safeway for several reasons, including the reduced stock since they added the pharmacy and the dour energy there. These poor folks must be the unhappiest grocers in the entire county!
