Construction on Annandale Walgreens to start in September
Construction on the new Walgreens in central Annandale is expected to start by mid-September, if all approval processes go smoothly, Elizabeth McKeeby of Walsh and Colucci told members of the Annandale Commercial Business District Planning Committee July 10.
The new drug store will occupy a key position in central Annandale, bordered by Little River Turnpike, Columbia Pike, and Backlick Road. It will replace Fuddruckers, which closed the end of April.
Walgreens will put in brick pavers along the three roads surrounding the store, as well as two bike racks, a couple of benches, more trees, and eight additional “acorn” street lights, says Michael Keith, senior project manager with Urban Ltd. The drive-through pharmacy window will face Columbia Pike.
To comply with a request from VDOT, cars won’t be able to access the Walgreens parking lot by turning left from Backlick Road. They will be able exit the lot onto Backlick in both directions.
The old Fuddruckers site is overgrown with weeds. |
How long until the 24-hour CVS finishes them off? Dont most if not all Walgreens close at like 9-10 at night? I can tell from experience, that the CVS does a good amount of business past those hours.
This is a huge waste of a great location. Did they do any research before deciding to come to Annandale?
CD, I suspect that a corporation the size of Walgreens probably did some research before spending somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 million on land and building.
As for me–my default choice will be Walgreens. My Fairfax City office is within a five minute walk of both CVS and Walgreens, so I'm familiar with both. CVS is definitely no longer Peoples Drug.
bike racks – yay!
There is still a possibility that Fuddruckers could reopen in a new place in central Annandale.
So Walgreens is not responsible for cutting down all the weeds during the five months or so between the closure of Fuddruckers and the start of construction? The company has the resources to hire a lawn care crew.
Too bad that we are getting yet more drug stores (see the drug store that is being constructed on Little River just west of the beltway). We need more restaurants, etc. in Annandale. We have enough drug stores.
Thanks for the update. Will look alot better than the structure there now which as I can recall has been unimproved since it was Three Chefs 40 years ago!
You are correct that CVS is no longer Peoples Drug Store which I did love. It has lost its home town feel but putting a Walgreens across the street makes no sense.
