Apparent murder suicide under investigation

UPDATED March 28: Mason District police are investigating an apparent homicide/suicide that occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 27.

The victims were identified as John Jackson, age 40, a former sergeant in the Fairfax County police force and, his 13-year-old daughter, Alexis Jackson, a student at Glasgow Middle School. They live at 5909 Summers Lane in the Pinecrest neighborhood in Falls Church.

A family member discovered the bodies inside a sport utility vehicle parked in the driveway of a home at 3800 Forest Grove Drive in the Sleepy Hollow Woods neighborhood in Annandale shortly after 1 a.m. No one else was in the car, says police spokesperson Eddy Azcarate. 

A neighbor says Jacksons estranged wife and her parents live in that house. Jackson and his wife reportedly split up years ago, but neighbors say they frequently visit her grandparents in Sleepy Hollow Woods.

John Jackson left the police department in 2010 after serving for 16 years. including a stint as a detective. He operates a trash business with his brother, Robert. The two of them grew up around here in a family with seven children and went to Stuart High School. John had been named Athlete of the Year twice at Stuart.

  5. So sad. What the heck happened? How can this happen in this area? Oh, well, seems everyone will just go about their business – nothing to see here – move along, etc. How can this happen in our community!!? Can somebody fill in these blanks before we just move on and forget this child? What happened? Stuff like this just does not happen everyday and what if anything could have been done to prevent this? Just heartbreaking.

    KIDS: if there is so much sadness, distress in your life at home speak to your friends, your family, school counselor, a trusted family friend, a teacher.. If you are not treated right at school, speak up!
    PARENTS: Please, there are many support services, take a parenting class, an anger management class, get couples counseling..
    FAMILIES, FRIENDS: Please do not remain silent bystanders. If you feel things are not right, get help, give support.
