Bailey’s Crossroads fire started with power strip
An electrical malfunction in a power strip caused a house fire in the 5700 block of Scoville Street in Bailey’s Crossroads at about 7 a.m. on Nov. 12, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports.
When units from the Fairfax County, Arlington, and Alexandria fire departments arrived, the fire had spread from the living room to the attached carport at the one-story, single-family home.
One resident was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two occupants were home at the time of the fire. They were alerted to the fire when smoke alarms sounded. Both safely evacuated before the firetrucks arrived. The residents accepted assistance from the Red Cross.
Damages as a result of the fire were approximately $173,750.
A good reminder for people to hold a good fire extinguisher
or double check all outlets / power strips and any other possible fire hazard items.
I've got these damn power strips/surge protectors all over the house. I had one blow up on me about 15 years ago and flames shot out of it during one of Dominion's power surges….good thing I was home. Between the Chinese crappy manufacturing and the idiots at Dominion, I am not surprised that more of these haven't happened.
