Be alert for ‘downed birds’

Fairfax County Animal Services Division has have received several reports of “downed birds” around the county. They appear to be eared grebes that likely have been thrown off their migratory track due to recent frigid weather. They have webbed feet and typically swim and fly. They are not accustomed to walking, so they appear wobbly or injured.
Police are coordinating with local veterinarians and the Wildlife Rescue League to humanely relocate the birds. Anyone who sees eared grebes should call Animal Control, 703-691-4131.
