Bicyling advocates press for more trails
If you’re a bike rider, you should check out Fairfax Advocates for Better Biking (FABB). This group, founded in 2005 by 10 bicycle enthusiasts, pushes for more bike trails, bike racks, and better protection for bike riders; provides bike valet parking at community festivals; sponsors training courses for bikers; and helps produce bike trail maps. The group is affiliated with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.
Among its key priorities, FABB is urging Fairfax County to develop a comprehensive bicycle plan, covering on and off-road routes, bike racks and storage rooms, and showers and changing rooms at workplaces. The group has also been actively involved in calling for the Tysons Corner redevelopment plan to include a network of bike routes.
Annandale could use some more bike routes, too, and how about some bike racks placed around some of the main shopping areas?
While I am not a frequent bike rider, I have mixed feelings on this. I'd love to see a lot of the things that FABB wants with the one big exception being the ON-road routes. The Master plan that they are pushing should have a goal to get bikers off roads, especially main ones. Mixing cars and bikes on the same road is first and foremost dangerous. It also does little for traffic congestion. The ultimate would be a greater web of off road paths and trails that are well maintained and have the amenities that bikers need.
