The body of man was discovered in Annandale’s Tollhouse Park at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Annandale Road Jan. 13, the Fairfax County Police Department states in the daily police blotter.
A citizen had called the police shortly before 1 p.m. to report “a suspicious man, possibly sleeping.” Responding officers determined the man was deceased, might have been homeless, and possibly died of hypothermia. The lowest temperature recorded for Jan. 13 was 21 degrees. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
There were no overt signs of foul play and there is no apparent threat to public safety, the FCPD says. The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
Update: Detectives have identified the deceased man as Jose Florentino Vasquez Marquez, 50, of Alexandria, the FCPD announced Jan. 15.

Perhaps if there was more pedestrian life and police foot patrols this no-mans land of Annandale could have saved this man. I believe that 9:32 was trying to convey that the pain of this community has been laden w despair and expressed by the dark side; and that our leaders and neighbors have cast a deaf air, nor could have a MISPLACED DMV helped, but vital street retail, housing, offices and steet level activity may have.
We hope that your uncle looks down and grants us his florentine grace of beauty that was in his heart and soul and that he connects that spirit to our soles.
Rest in peace and pray for us to find our way.
Time to kick out the homeless shelter in Bailey's to make way for apartments. The most vulnerable be damned. Go sit on a park bench and die.

I feel small, knowing I can do little to help the many poor and homeless among us.
What is sickening are those among us who are so cold-blooded they make cheap, ignorant, and down-right inaccurate political points at the news of the death of this man. These people will reap the karma they have sown.
Especially the reptile above (Anonoymous 1/15/16, 10:15AM) who wants to make this about the Bailey's homeless shelter, even though the Bailey's shelter remains open and will not be closed without being replaced by a temporary, and then a brand-new permanent, shelter.
This pathetic individual is an obvious cold-blooded hypocrite. They claim to be concerned about the "most vulnerable" when it is obvious they don't want the current Bailey's homeless shelter closed because they are concerned the temporary or permanent homeless shelter will be located closer to their home. Pathetic ugly troll this commenter is.
May the homeless among us, especially those suffering from severe mental illness or substance abuse, and unable to take care of themselves and keep themselves safe, be sought out and helped by all of us (rather than being reported to the police as "suspicious"); especially when the temperatures dive below freezing and their lives are at serious risk.

Amen. As Alizabeth has said, he was not homeless, but even if he had been, he would not have been less worthy of compassion.
Hateful commenters like the ones we see here must have emotional/spiritual deficits that need their attention. Open your eyes, people: what do you see when you look in the mirror?

In all fairness, your statement is unfair.
The issue in the SEQ isn't whether or not to provide a shelter. The issue is a permanent shelter vs. temporary, then permanent shelter.
Absolutely no one is advocating turning people out to "sit on a park bench and die".
That is an absurd statement that doesn't serve to further dialog.
I do not think the first guy was trying to be cruel or I hope not I think he was trying to point out how far the Mason District has gone. As far as the shelter no one is upset about Bailey's Shelter the issue is why do they want us to spend money to make a temporary shelter then build a new shelter when we currently have a shelter that could be added to or use one of the vacant building in the Mason District. All we are hearing about is how they are going to frivulously spend the taxpayers money.
R.I.P. Uncle Jose you will be missed….and no he was not homeless his heart failed….to all the people who had something heartless to say shame on you…..dont comment unless you know the whole story….we are saddened by the death of my uncle.

I'm sorry that so many–or ANY–emotionally bankrupt strangers are only adding to your pain at this difficult time. Please know that not everyone is so despicable; my husband and I wish you and your family comfort, healing, and peace.
I think Anonymous 1/15/16 was being sarcastic, not cruel, implying that we give short shrift to homeless shelters in favor of more revenue generating development, thus leaving those without shelter with nowhere to go, so they wind up dead. It's a shame no one was around to call 911 or administer CPR.
