Bowling alley to be completely redone
Renovations of the interior of the bowling alley on Markham Street in Annandale, are expected to start by the end of the year. Work on the roof and HVAC system is already under way.
AMF Annandale Lanes is going to be rebranded as a Bowlero bowling center and will be completely redone, with new lanes, new videogames, new check-in desk, and upgraded food service.
It will feature “cosmic bowling” with laser lights, while remaining a hub for bowling leagues.
The center will stay open during the renovations, with much of the work done after hours. Part of the lanes could be closed while the work is being done.
Meanwhile, the center is hoping to fill 80 to 100 new staff positions, including shift leaders, operations managers, front desk attendants, servers/food runners, bartenders, cooks, and porters. Apply online at [email protected]/careers.

wasn't this bowling alley going to be torn down and new apartments built?
Developer did not want to risk building new apartments in a place coined "the Dump." It has gone the way of all new development, right to Arlington and Alexandria, where the demand and economics are. Mason probalby has been redlined, but no one will admit it.

Things are proposed and then pulled back. Same thing true for Sears at 7-corners, 5600 Columbia Pike and Weissberg/county office on Moncure ave. It really is pathetic. You'd think with our proximity to DC we'd get more development.

Poorly rated schools, basic mass transit and opposition to most projects. Not worth it for developers. I dont sense there is much urgency or will by the Board to help either the school or transit situation or help otherwise.

That plan was approved by the Board of Supervisors in 2014 but the developers decided not to go through with it.
And thankfully so! Less development means less traffic!
The roofing work was a big expense all by itself, so no doubt the renovations will be quality work too !!! I don't think we need more rental units in the immediate area?
My understanding is that the developers were unable to secure the needed financing.
What bank is going to invest in a project for high density in area that does not have good mass transit, vacant storefronts and a high commercial office vacancyrate.
DC, Arlington, Alexandria and Tysons are the job centers. Mason does not have expedient mass transit other than a collection of busses that get stuck in traffic. And to boot to get anywhere one has to take at least one bus and then change to a metro station.
Besides poor mass transit, the area has poor performing schools, boarding houses, crazy NIMBYS, a lack of other developers willing to take a risk in Mason on mixed-use development, and an ineffective supervisor who cannot galvinize a renaissance in Mason, except for building a homeless shelter, and potentiall a Social Services County Office Building. Just what we need more social services and an occupier of land use that does not generate tax revinue or generate mixed use retail/commericial/housing activity. Because of that the area has more than likely been red-lined.
I'm glad to hear that there won't be more apartments built there. One of the things I like about Annandale is that it's near several larger, more "metropolitan" suburbs, but it's not one OF them. Revitalization would be one thing, but increasing the population density would create new problems and headaches. Bigger is not always better.
I agree with previous poster at 3:39 PM. Why destroy a center of community activity? Personally, I love the mid-century modern exterior of the Annandale bowling alley. Not all "progress" is beneficial to people. It's nice to have a place in Northern Virginia that hasn't been "Panera-ized."

There's going to be enough new 'housing' crammed in at Heritage Mall. Who the hell is going to want to live there being surrounded by 'The Avant'?!? Have you seen Americana Dr recently? It really does look like a 3rd world country.
