Braddock community leaders encouraged to attend Neighborhood College

Leaders of neighborhood organizations in the Braddock District of Fairfax County, or people who want to become community leaders, are encouraged to join Supervisor John Cook’s Braddock District Neighborhood College.

The Neighborhood College is a civic engagement program open to residents interested in learning about Fairfax County and how to work with neighbors, community organizations, and local government.

Participants attend a program in community leadership once a week for six weeks, Oct. 9-Nov. 13, 6:30-9 p.m. at Little River Glen Senior Center, 4001 Barker Court, Fairfax. The program is free and dinner is included.

Community leaders will learn how to strengthen neighborhoods, build citizen engagement, and promote a strong sense of community. The program is designed by Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and taught by county employees and community volunteers.

The first session will cover an overview of the county’s government, budget, and demographics. Future topics include public safety, emergency preparedness, code enforcement, zoning, stormwater issues, recycling, community leadership, conflict resolution, and achieving cultural competence.

  1. "The first session will cover an overview of the county’s government, budget, and demographics." Well that sure as hell will put everyone to sleep. Sounds like a Department of Code Compliance presentation. A great way to make sure no one comes back. How about start with the question of why the Department of Code Compliance is so worthless when it comes to protecting the non-HOA neighborhoods. That is something we in the non-HOAs at least, would be very interested in learning about.
