Car wash proposed for Bailey’s Crossroads
Crossroads Cycle [Google Maps] |
The Mr. Wash company plans to seek permission from Fairfax County to build a car wash facility at 5715 Leesburg Pike in Bailey’s Crossroads.
It would be located on the site of Crossroads Cycle and would be accessible from Seminary Road, said Bob Brant, an attorney with Walsh Colucci, who described the project at a meeting of the Mason District Land Use Committee Feb. 27.
Steven Harris, the owner of the Mr. Wash, has a contract to purchase the property. There are four Mr. Wash locations in Northern Virginia and two in suburban Maryland.
The Bailey’s Crossroads location would be next to the site where the new Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter will be built. Harris said he would be interested in hiring shelter residents. Mr. Wash would have six to 13 employees.
The $9 million project would include a conveyer belt for moving vehicles through the brushless car wash system, a lane for cars waiting in line for a wash, car vacuum stations, 20 parking places, and a tower to ensure the building is visible from the main road.
The land doesn’t need to be rezoned – it’s currently C8 – but Mr. Wash would need to file for a special exception because a car wash is not a permitted use in land zoned C8. Mr. Wash hasn’t filed an application with the county yet.
There is literally a car wash around the corner from this spot on Columbia Pike AND a car wash at the Shell just up the road on Rt 7. I suppose Baileys will be the Car Wash Capital of the World.
Sears development delayed, 5600 Columbia Pike delayed, AvalonBay by Moncure delayed, City Diner development cancelled, even spectrum development was delayed…Car washes, one after another, dumpnesss that is Mason.
Kudos to Mr. Harris for his willingness to provide opportunity to shelter residents!
There are sveral Car Wash businesses located under a mile from this location. Why close another small business that attracts a wider variety of people to their often overlooked area in Bailey’s Crossroads.
What does everyone have against car washes?
Only that seemingly none are equipped to wash sports sedans like mine that have lower suspensions. Just saying. – Sparky
"working at the car wash…… working at the car wash – yeah" Well where else can an illegal alien or parolee get a yob?
Ok that was fairly sarcastic. Here is something serious. The stores there are hanging by a thread. REI, Best Buy, and Dick's sporting good are the only serious retailers there – the Anchors so-to-speak. That will bring in more affluent customers. The rest of the stores in that area are discounters and thrifty nickel establishments. That site would be perfect for a technology park where the millennials that live in Arlington just over that border would come over and work and spend money on restaurants to just start. The county needs to entice developers to develop properties that will thrive not just maintain the status quo or worsen the situation.
I won't disagree with you that any kind of tech business in the area would be great, but the "millennials" that would hypothetically be living in south Arlington that might be working in Baileys will just drive the 3 miles back east to eat in Arlington.
What? No apartments to be built on top of this car wash?
It will be a vibrant addition at the gateway to the shelter.
Great way to put the Dr Wash on Columbia Pike out of business. Can the county be more stupid or do they relish at destroying Mason District? I think the Planning Board should get in a convertible, leave the roof down and go through a car wash and clean their little brains out.
Will someone please tell Mr. Wash to run! $9 million for a car wash business in Baileys is just a terrible idea in general.
Avalon Bay bails, Penny boasts a brand new deluxe homeless center and now a car wash. Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on? Did all the smart people leave Fairfax for Arlington?
Way to pay paradise and put up a car wash. Crossroad Cycles has been there for a long long time. In my opinion the place is a historic landmark as crossroad cycles. 🙁
Has anyone heard the rumor that the business towers in Skyline behind Target will be turned into apparments? True or not?
Cranes everywhere except Mason. PG used the excuse of the economy for lack of good development in Mason. What is her excuse now. Skyline would retrofit into a great bio or computer high tech center. And all we get is a homeless center and a car wash in area where there already is one. Something is very wrong with this picture.
actually there i was wrong– there are THREE other car washes nearby. Dr. Wash on Columbia Pike, car wash at shell right across from the proposed site, and car wash at Shell on rt 7. Up a bit further on rt 7 is a Sunoco car wash so throw that in there as well.
we can't get nice things. good way to help run out another local business to boot. maybe the sex shop can expand and really make that stretch classy.
