A man was arrested by police at the Little River Turnpike Shopping Center in Annandale this morning following a carjacking. Police used an “electronic control weapon” on the suspect after he got into a fight with a security guard, took the guard’s car, and crashed into a dozen cars in the parking lot.

According to Fairfax County Police spokesperson Michael Crutchman, a man who had been involved in a car crash fled on foot to the shopping center at 7414 Little River Turnpike accompanied by a pit bull. He attempted a carjack, but the woman who was in the car escaped and summoned a Safeway security guard.

The security guard and suspect got into a physical altercation, and the suspect cut the guard with a knife and managed to get the guard’s car keys. He got into the guard’s car and starting ramming into parked cars before crashing into a pillar in front of Safeway. There were several injuries but none were life threatening, Crutchman says. Twelve cars were damaged.

Police are not yet able to confirm whether the suspect was mentally impaired or on drugs, Crutchfield said, but the officers who responded to the incident had been trained in crisis intervention. The police used the electronic control weapon (they don’t use the term taser) and pepper spray because they needed to take extra precautions due to the presence of the pit bull.

According to a witness, the suspect was African-American, in his 20s or 30s, with dreads, and was shouting “Live for Jesus.” He thought the man was probably high on something. The dog was not on a leash.

Update: Police later identified the suspect as Kelly Christopher Robinson, 35, of Triangle, Va. Robinson was taken to a hospital for treatment of laceration wounds and is in custody.

  1. We drove past right when they were taking the guy down. I didn't get a look at the suspect but did see the cops about to get him, they had what looked like machine guns trained on him, just as another cop drove up, got out of the car and got his gun out. As we kept driving west on Little River Turnpike, we saw at least 6 more police cars heading back that way super fast and lights blaring. It was like a TV show.
