Cat café planned for Fairfax

The CatCafe Lounge in Los Angeles.

Fairfax County is poised to get its first cat café.

The Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special permit in September for a
business called Patriot Pawsabilities at 10611 Braddock Road, Fairfax. The cat
café, in a storefront at University Mall, would allow patrons to relax and
interact with cats and kittens from local rescue organizations.

It would be open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a
week and would be targeted to George Mason University students. It would also be available for community outreach, focusing on Wounded
Warriors and the elderly, from 8 to 10 a.m. on weekdays.

The owner, Monique Ryan, hopes to open Patriot Pawsabilities in early 2019. There would be about 40 cats and kittens on site. The facility would also host various activities, such
as yoga and knitting classes, trivia night, music with cats, paint night, and
board game night, as well as quiet study time.
The cats would be vetted to ensure they are healthy and
interact well with humans and other cats. The plans call for a main lounge with
cat walks and cat trees and separate rooms for kittens and classes.
According to Health Department rules, the cat café can only
offer food and drinks that are prepackaged and cannot operate as a “food
establishment.”
Cat cafés have appeared worldwide since the first one opened
in Thailand in 1998. The concept is especially popular in Japan, where
there are more than 150.
Crumbs and Whiskers, which opened in Georgetown in
2015, is the only cat café in the D.C. region. Mount Purrnon Cat Café and Wine Bar is in the planning stages for Old Town, Alexandria.

  1. That is way too cute. I wish my cat would be more social, this would be great. She is a bit too old to change her ways. Perhaps we need a cat senior center:-)

  2. If my cats are any indication, I'm not sure that knitting and cats mix. But I'd love a place to hang out with other knitters/crocheters!
