Chico’s invites the public to a foster dog event

Poseidon
Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue seeks foster parents to care for dogs
until permanent homes are found for them.
The all-volunteer nonprofit is hosting an adoption event
Feb. 11 at Chico’s Natural Pet Market in Barcroft Plaza, noon-3 p.m.
The organization, based in the Shenandoah Valley, wants to
find more foster parents in Northern Virginia, says John Kennedy of Annandale, who
will bring Poseidon, the black Labrador/shepherd mix he is fostering to the
event.
Kennedy can’t permanently adopt Poseidon because he already
has two other dogs. “He’s an awesome dog. I’ll be sad to see him go,” he says,
but he will be able pick the best home for him. “I know when he is adopted he will
go to a family where he fits in with their lifestyle.”

Poseidon is from an animal shelter in Berkeley County, W.
Va. While Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue gets a lot of dogs from the Shenandoah
Valley, it receives dogs from all over, even Egypt. Many of its dogs are strays
from Texas who were picked up by animal control. Puppies are available, too.

Most of them are least part German shepherd, Kennedy says German
shepherds are smart dogs and are easy to train.
Foster parents care for a dog in their home, ensure it gets
exercise, provide basic training if necessary to ensure the dog is manageable
and marketable, and help search for someone willing to adopt it. The rescue
group pays for medical care.
Chico’s Natural Pet Market (6349A Columbia Pike) hosts adoption events with
Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue about once a month – and hosts cat rescue groups
nearly every weekend.

Kennedy urges people to come to Chico’s next Sunday and
explore the possibility of fostering and adoption. “It’s a great way to help
out a dog in need.”
