Child Development Center offers summer program
Summer fun at the CDC. |
For the first time, the siblings of children who spend the
school year at the ACCA Child Development Center in Annandale, can come there all
summer long for fun and educational enrichment.
The CDC summer program serves 26 kids ages 6-12, 7 a.m.-5:30
p.m. all summer long. It’s located in the newly renovated area of the ACCA
building at 7200 Columbia Pike, which had housed the Annandale senior center. That center closed in 2015.

The CDC program includes soccer, music, and lots of STEM
activities, says CDC Executive Director Maria-Isabel Ballivian. There are two
groups, one for younger children and one for older children, with two teachers
per group.

If you’re still looking for a summer program for your child,
look elsewhere, however. Registration for the CDC summer program filled up on the first
day.

The CDC does need to hire about seven temporary teachers for
the summer. Applicants need a high school diploma, experience with
young children, and must have or be able to get a child development associate
credential.

Ballivian plans to add an afterschool and
before-school program this fall, pending approval by the CDC board. That
program would be for about 20 school-age siblings of children already attending
the CDC. Having all their children at one location would be more convenient for
parents, she says.

Big blocks for big projects. |
The new space at the CDC includes a big playroom that can
also be used for movies and teacher meetings and a small room for special
needs-children, in addition to new classrooms.

The CDC acquired a set of giant blue blocks from Imagination Playground for building projects. Ballivian is planning to host a family
building contest using those blocks at the upcoming Taste of Annandale, with
the public voting for their favorite.

While the CDC is expanding to serve school-age children,
its main focus remains preschoolers, she says. The center serves 256 babies,
toddlers, and children up to age 4. The full cost is $350 a week for
preschoolers and $410 a week for infants, but about 85 percent of families
receive some level of public subsidy.
