Childcare center proposed for South Street
The Gardner School has proposed building a childcare center at 6637 South Street next to Annandale Road in Falls Church.
A temporary building on that site houses the Fort Buffalo Fire Station while its permanent building on Sleepy Hollow is under construction. The temporary structure will be demolished when it’s no longer needed.

Fairfax County’s Land Development Services is reviewing the site plan for the childcare center. The proposal calls for a single-story building with 39 parking spaces.
The Gardner School operates 38 childcare/preschool programs in nine states. There are four in Virginia, in Arlington, Herndon, Ashburn, and Manassas.
The temporary fire station on South Street has been there since 2017, despite when being built it being said it would be removed promptly after the Jefferson Fire Station renovation was completed. That never happened.
The intersection of South Street and Annandale Road, and the intersection of Annandale Road and Rte. 50, a hundred feet away, are absolute messes at all but the quietest hours of the day and night.
And we’re thinking of adding, what 100 new trips a day, at the height of morning and evening rush?
Yikes.
It wasn’t demolished because it was reused for the seven corners fire station renovation, The re-use was part of the original plan. Once 7 corners (Fort Buffalo) is done it will be demolished.
I’m with you on the traffic. And the proposal has one exit/entrance on South Street. So that, plus the chaos that is the 7-11 parking lot plus Holmes Run Road ought to make for absolute gridlock and road rage central. I’ve been in this neighborhood a long time and I can only guess FCPD will be no where to be found for traffic enforcement
I agree with another Sleepy Hollow resident. The current situation at the intersection of Annandale Rd and South St, and the Anthony’s, Walgreens, Page Honda shopping center is a mess, especially bad during the morning , and late afternoon heavy traffic hours. Also, because of a similar school situation on Sleepy Hollow Rd and Holmes Run Rd, traffic backs up for several blocks due to drop off, and pick up for Congressional School. We will need traffic lights at both ends of Holmes Run Rd. I understand the need for child care centers, but not to the detriment grid lock in a nice quiet neighborhood. JG
Looking at the Gardner School’s website, it looks like they have existing facilities that aren’t standalone structures.
It feels like there are a bunch of structures within a mile of this location that could be better logistically. Like any of the structures between 50 and South Street to the east of the church. Or any of the commercially zoned houses (?) that operate businesses on either side of 50 both east and west of Annandale Road.
