Coffee shop to open in Annandale next month

Underdog Coffee & Bread is expected to open in Annandale in mid-March “if everything goes well,” reports manager June Kim.

The shop, at 7109 Columbia Pike, will serve regular and specialty coffee, breakfast sandwiches, pastries, bagels, and acai bowls.

Neither the menu nor the hours have been finalized, Kim says. She plans to add outdoor seating when the weather gets warmer.

Staff hiring is underway. There are openings for a barista, cashier, and sandwich maker. If you’re interested, send an email to [email protected] or text 301-357-5361.

Underdog is located in the former Tobacco Lux space. That shop closed in December 2023.

  1. I think Annandale and Falls Church City has too many Asian restaurant
saturated the food restaurant locally . We need more Breakfast, steak and coffee shop.
On broad street in Falls Church. I counted 15 various Asian restaurant. Not enough diversity !

      1. I am sure they did read it. It still stands that we have too many Asian restaurants and that we need more mainstream restaurants.

  2. I totally agree “Y”.

I could not believe, in Falls Church City, all the newly constructed apartments/condos; a majority of the retail on the ground level were Asian Restaurants.

    Then all of Eden Center.

Along with Annandale. I know when Penny Gross was Supervisor; I did ask that ‘businesses’ in Annandale have what the facility was. So many of the signs were not in English. When I spoke with Penny Gross, I said gee, I don’t know if the business is a hair salon, restaurant or what. Penny did make that change.

Well, I guess Italians, Irish, French, best start having more babies or the Asians will out number us.

Like our Government has asked to limit the selling of ‘land/private property’ to the Chinese; in fact I believe the Government has said to stop.

    Enjoy Life

    1. I don’t get the complaints about having too many Asian restaurants. There are Chinatowns, Little Italys, etc all over the world and Annandale happens to be a place where folks from Korea and other Asian countries have decided to settle. These folks are setting up businesses, paying their taxes, contributing to society, etc. If what they offer doesn’t interest you, no problem, go find a restaurant/salon/store that does, you have that freedom!

Are any of you doing anything to solve the problem that exists for you like opening up your own store? If not, how does crying about this on a community website solve your problem?

I don’t get it, stop being so miserable and be happy there are options abound in the DC area, maybe just not right down the street from you.

      1. Thank you, GT! Our neighborhood is lucky to have food from all over the world and especially that represents the people of Annandale! 💕 I agree, if they want their specific culture represented, they can open their own restaurant!

      2. Quite frankly, I do not feel that the Asian population is very friendly at their respective businesses, and I do not feel welcome — that is why we would like more “mainstream” businesses. So, your arrogant attitude about finding somewhere else is very typical of what I find in Asian establishments. Good for you for reinforcing this sentiment. My belief system has been reinforced.

        1. Mainstream is code for something, I think we all know. To label all of these businesses as unfriendly is lazy and hateful.

Arrogant attitude about asking you to solve your own problem rather than complain about it and do nothing? I don’t like this so someone else build me more “mainstream” restaurants!

          Good lord, grow up.

        2. I am not South East Asian and the only language my white husband and I speak is English. We have never encountered unfriendly service at these Asian establishments because of it. I grew up in the area and I can’t think of a single unfriendly encounter like that. Sometimes people project their own racism on others, I guess. Personally I am happy to see so many mom and pop businesses thriving here in Annandale, full of happy customers.

    2. I make it a point to read the comments for a little game I call “how many responses before it’s racist” and you didn’t disappoint, CJ (or “Y” before you). Although your post was so over the top with racism and ignorance that I can only guess it’s trolling; no one around here can be this stupid. That said, more pho and kimbap and cellophane noodles for me, thanks!

  3. Excited to try this. We’ve needed more bagel and sandwich options!
I’m really hoping the pastries include coffee cake.
