Community celebrates Chinese New Year
Luther Jackson Middle School was turned into a mini-Chinatown Saturday as people from Annandale and across the region ushered in the Year of the Rabbit at a Chinese New Years Festival.
A Dragon Dance wound through the crowd, as spectators enjoyed crafts, games, and food. The entertainment included dance and instrumental music from Japan, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, Mongolia, and India, as well as China. Among the exhibitors: purveyors of jewelry, crafts, and T-shirts; practitioners of Falun Gong, health clinics; banks; and various organizations.
The annual event is aimed at bringing together the Chinese community and promoting cultural exchange, says Larry Liu, spokesperson for the Asian Community Service Center, which sponsors the annual New Year’s celebration.
