A cool ‘Breeze’ invigorates Annandale
Annandale’s new Breeze Bakery Café distinguishes itself from other Korean bakeries in Annandale by offering gelato, frozen yogurt, and the Korean frozen dessert bing soo (red bean and strawberry), as well as coffee, and many varieties of bread, cookies, and party cakes, says manager Jong Chun Lee.
The attractive two-story café at 4125 Hummer Road is owned by Daniel Shin, who also owns Yechon, the popular Korean Japanese restaurant next door.
Lee has only been in Annandale for about a month and hopes to bring his wife and children here soon from Korea, he explained with the help of employee Hyun Ha who served as translator. Lee learned to make frozen desserts at Pinkberry, the Los Angeles-based frozen yogurt chain started by Korean-Americans.
Many of the breads at Breeze, all made on the premises, tend to be on the sweet side. Varieties include white bean, rice doughnut, butter cream, cherry pound cake, walnut baguette, strawberry roll, pumpkin cake, carrot roll, fresh cream stick, sweet potato cake, nine century bread, and thirteen century bread. There are also savory breads like bacon and pizza baguette.
Breeze is open daily, 8 a.m. to midnight.
So the questions are: how good is the gelato and, at least for us non-Koreans, is bing soo an acquired taste?
The lemon gelato is very intense, and I've eaten a LOT of gelato all over Italy. Will try the bing soo on my next visit.
Bing soo is an acquired taste for some because of the red bean. The bean is sweet, but some non-Asians may not be comfortable with beans in a desert. But you can order one of the other bing soos (such as the fruit one), which doesn't have red bean — if the beans put you off.
