He saw a man who appeared to be intoxicated arguing with the
cashier, cursing, and trying to steal things, Doumbia says. When
he tried to intervene, the man hit him on the head. And when the police arrived,
the man fought back and was tackled to the ground in the parking lot.
Doumbia agreed to press charges. He believes Lopez was known
to police, and he is concerned about criminal activity in the neighborhood. In
appreciation for stepping up, H Mart gave him a discount on his groceries.

My heart breaks for those children. I just don't understand some people.
Wow, real quality people living and/or moving into our area. As much disdain as I have for the Wall, I have more disdain for this element that has invaded our neighborhoods and have chosen a path of criminality. This is the minority, however I hope they are deported. I guess my concerns regarding the immigrant tree cutters are of less importance. None the less, Annandale has changed and not for the better.
Wow, way to jump to conclusions, Anon 857. How do you even know that these two people are illegal or subject to deportation? And concerns about "immigrant tree cutters"? Not every immigrant is here illegally. I'm not a fan of illegal immigration at all, but at least I do not assume someone is here illegally and can be deported simply due to their name or the color of their skin. Just wow.
Perhaps if you got hit over the head you may think differently.
Hit over the head? What does that mean? Is that a reference to some criminal who happens to be illegal hitting you over the head? Criminals can be US citizens, residents, TPS recipients, or illegal immigrants. Most people are not criminals and to blame crime on illegal immigration is not only ignorant but also racist.
If you actually read the article you would know what I am referring to with regards to being hit over the head. Yes my comment is a general statement and not intended to be racial. We have a huge illegal immigration problem and the greatest catastrophes in the States and abroad are occurring in many instances by people entering countries that have not been sufficiently vetted or committed to the values of their home country.
I call bull on you saying your comment is not intended to be racial. This article had nothing to do with illegal immigration. I don't see anything that says that these people were illegal immigrants. You are just jumping to conclusions based entirely on their names. They may have committed a crime, but their immigration status is not raised here and for all you know they are all US citizens (Yes-people with the last name Lopez can be US citizens). If you're going to prejudge people on that basis alone, at least be honest about it. I would note that I happen to agree with you on illegal immigration and vetting people and that we are letting in people without sufficient vetting, BUT, that does not mean you need to jump to this conclusion just because you see a last name that you see as foreign.
You are mistaken, this has nothing to do with his name being Lopez. There are many good folks that have that sir name. The point is that the majority of crimes (not all) being made in Mason are unfortunately by Hispanics that may or may not be citizens. Regardless of their status, these folks have committed crimes which leads me to conclude that they had not been vetted appropriately and should have not been allowed into our country.
Wow. Are you serious with this Anon 1237pm? With every word you reveal your ignorance. Just because someone has a last name that is Hispanic does not mean they were allowed into the US. Some people with Hispanic last names have had their family here for hundreds of years, some had a Hispanic father and a non-Hispanic mother. Any number of reasons. For example, I have a friend whose family is originally from Mexico — and she has a Hispanic last name — but her family has been in the US for a couple of hundred years, starting in California. She wasn't "allowed" into this country or "vetted" – she is a US citizen just like you and me who happens to have a Hispanic last name. Please also name the source that most crimes in Mason are by Hispanics — I have not found any support for this overwhelmingly racist statement.
I give up, your the arrogant one or just have your head in the sand. I bet you that 75% of the crime reported in Mason is by either illegals or those that were not vetted properly. Unfortunately they are most often from Central America. Its no different than it was in the 60's w Italians and their mob connections. Not every Italian was in the mafia, but every mafia person was most likely Italian. And the mob did present a huge problem back then. Read your history man, you may learn that its not all roses regardless of one's sir name associations.
I may be wrong, but most of the reports Fairfax publishes on crime do not boil down to demographic data. I'd like to hear where you're getting this fact that most of the crime committed in Mason is by hispanics. That's a pretty big claim.
75% of the crime reported in Mason is by illegals? Where are you getting this hilarious figure.
It's SURname and you sound like a very old person with those opinions.
Wow being agist after calling someone out on being racist. It's a function of heavily congested housing, economic stress, and a national culture willing to glamorize drugs and look the other way. It is not a function of illegal immigration unless you admit that our senseless policies denying basic essentials to the impoverished and doubling down on victimizing the marginalized who were already so oppressed and desperate at home that they were willing to brave hell to get here contribute to the situation. Yes, people tend to cluster in communities where they have shared experiences and they create local cultural norms that may not be as far from what they tried to escape as they like, but whose fault is that? They are being treated as badly as cattle on their way to slaughter and either dumped on the street or tossed back over the way after exhausting all their resources.
Why do all of you think that I am against immigration? We all came from somewhere else other than Native Americans, and they may have migrated from Asia.
As for current conditions, these are deplorable: cages, etc. However, there needs to be an orderly way of bringing folks in as we did in the early 20th century such as Ellis Island. My grandmother had to travel from Europe 2xs because she was rejected the first time for a medical condition; not fun when traveling steerage.
The masses coming from Central America are overwhelming our current system which is pretty dysfunctional to begin with in its inability to screen newcomers. As a result people who should not be here are, and its those that may be contributing to an uptick in the crime statistics in Mason. If one was just to scan the blog you would see that many of these crimes have unfortunately been committed by folks of Hispanic and very poor origins. I would say to that community, it is also up to you to police your own communities and work with crime prevention, churches, schools and other social programs to make a difference. That is what other ethnic groups have done in the past to pull their own out of poverty. And that is what many Latino groups are attempting to do here and elsewhere with mixed success.
Its a tough call and there are no easy answers which may be forcing the government's hand to do things that none of us find palatable. And yes it is "sur" and sir. Habits of spell check dependency. And no I am not OLD.
Just remember that most of us lock our doors at night because we don't want the uninvited coming in. That should also hold true at our borders: airports, ports and land boundaries.
Just to clarify–the ageist person (Anon 4/10@9:24) is not the same person who called the person racist (me). That comment was also uncalled for. My entire point to begin with was that the people accused of these crimes are just people. There is nothing in the article that says they are immigrants and to jump to the conclusions that (a) they are immigrants, and (b) they are illegal, is racist, regardless of whatever age you are.
I'd like to point out, like it's been done many times, that what is reported in the blog is a SAMPLING of crime across the district and county. Because Ellie reports crime here does not mean that there is more crime elsewhere, and because you happen to see hispanic crime reported here does not make it prevalent.
Excellent point, Adam.
Then I guess the blog is just pointing out for the most of the time hispanic crime. I do not think this blog's author is bias. Conclusion is that many of our crimes are being committed by latinos. You should probably get off the penny gross juice, because when you wake up you may find yourself in some other country.
