Crime report: shooting, assault, robbery

The crime report from the Fairfax County Police Department for the past week includes these incidents in the Annandale/Mason District area: 

  • There was a shooting in the 4900 block of Americana Drive, Annandale, at 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 16. The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries that were later downgraded to stable.
  • A driver crashed into an occupied apartment building at Fairmont Gardens in the 4100 block of Wadsworth Court in Annandale at about 1:40 p.m. on Aug. 16. The driver and an occupant of the apartment were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Charges for the driver are pending.

  • Officers arrested Angel Matute-Aviles, 18, at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 19 for trespassing after he had previously been banned from a property in the 3400 block of Lake Street in Culmore. 

During the arrest, Said Salem, 22, of Annandale, attempted to intervene. Salem was charged with seven counts of stolen credit cards, assault on law enforcement, three counts of vehicle trespass, and two counts of identity theft. Matute-Aviles was charged with assault on law enforcement, trespassing, and obstruction of justice.

  • The Mobil gas station at 6318 Leesburg Pike in Seven Corners was robbed at about 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. A man entered the store, assaulted two employees, and demanded money. He displayed a handgun, took cash, and ran away. 
  • The CVS at 3535 S. Jefferson St., Bailey’s Crossroads, was robbed shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 19. A man entered the store and was seen concealing merchandise. When confronted by store employees, he displayed a knife and left the store with the merchandise. 
  • Four people broke into Falls Church High School shortly before 3 a.m. on Aug. 17. They were found by police and a school security officer after an alarm went off. Wilfredo Flores, 18, of Falls Church, Manuel Mendez, 18, of Manassas, and Rashel Pena Pereira, 18, of Annandale were charged with unlawful entry. Charges are pending against a juvenile who also involved.
  • A man walking near an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Vista Drive in Culmore at 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 was assaulted by a man who stole his personal property. The suspect fled. No injuries were reported.
  • On Aug. 18, shortly after 6:30 p.m., a man was robbed by a man he arranged to meet using a social media app. At the meeting place, in the 4900 block of Manitoba Drive, Lincolnia, the attacker displayed a knife, took personal property, and left. 
  • When police stopped a Honda Civic for a traffic violation at the Medford Drive/Little River Turnpike intersection shortly before 2 a.m. on Aug. 15, they discovered it was stolen and was involved in a robbery in an adjoining jurisdiction. 

Cindy Gomez-Santos, 21, of Fairfax, Edwin Lainez Lara, 27, and Juan Carlos Anaya Hernandez, 23, were charged with receiving stolen property. Custody was transferred to an adjoining jurisdiction. Gomez-Santos was also charged with driving without a license.

  2. Kudos to our local police force for doing their best keeping our community safe.

    No one should take these reports for granted,
    these black and blue heroes are doing day and night to keep us safe and fix the mess our politician are doing with their complete lack of competence.

    Keep that in your hearts and minds on the next time you hear "De fund the Police"

    if anything, they need more resources.
