Crossroads Safeway closes June 22

The Safeway at Crossroads Center in Bailey’s Crossroads is closing on June 22, and it appears no new tenants for that space – or the long-empty HH Gregg store – have been lined up.

Here’s what we heard from Alex Shiel, director of leading and brokerage with the Rappaport Co.: “We are just as excited as you on the potential replacements for these two spaces. We cannot disclose any retailers that we are talking to. However, I will attest that we are leaving no stone unturned.”

    1. It will probably end up as a TitleMax mega store. The entire area needs to be re-invented and made into a mixed use commercial hub before Gross builds her social services palace to replace Penny park that will squelch any possibility of a commercial hub. She already put a dent in things when she decided to plop a high-rise deluxe homeless shelter right smack in the middle of Baileys. Developers are running right to Arlington, Alexandria City and DC, and totally ignoring Baileys.

  1. The word we heard is that the Crossroads Center management refused to renew Safeway's lease. Since we didn't transfer our prescriptions, we went on a week day morning to the Safeway on Patrick Henry and 50. There were more employees than customers and the products were the same, if not inferior. At least we had no trouble getting out of the parking lot. We can only hope that a quality food store will be moving in, however, we aren't holding our breath.
This is the company that cut down 85% of the original trees because "they blocked customers' view of the stores" and planted shrubs. So much for proffers and Baileys beautification.

    1. The old guards are dying out – Safeway, shoppers, giant (less so) – and are being replaced by Aldi, Wegmans, Harris Teeter.

  2. Another Merrifield Mosaic Districe please: add stores, restaurants, theater, apartment, townhome…. This whole area of bailey's cross road commercial area should be re-planned / re-designed.
