Daycare center proposed for Lincolnia church

Flor Brea, a former teacher in the Alexandria City Public Schools, is seeking a zoning special exception to open a bilingual daycare center in Lincolnia United Methodist Church.

The proposal, presented to the Mason District Land Use Committee earlier this week, calls for a total of 25 children, ranging from 16 and-a-half-months old to age 5. There would be five small classrooms with two teachers per class.

The day care center, called Luca’s Rainbow, would be a tenant of the church, at 6335 Little River Turnpike. It would be open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m., and would not interfere with church operations.

The program would offer extracurricular activities for students, such as dance, yoga, and Spanish lessons, along with field trips and summer camp. There will be a fenced-in play area outdoors.

Brea plans to install a couple of security measures: Cameras will be set up in classrooms that parents could access via smartphone. A door system will be installed allowing parents to gain access to the building via a smartphone app.

The Planning Commission public hearing is scheduled for Nov. 1.

The church celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2014.
