Two Falls Church residents discovered what appeared to be the body of an
adult male lying in a wooded area near South Street and Holmes Run Road at
about 10:30 a.m. on May 10. The Fairfax County Police Department reports that the Robert S. Johnson, 66, who was homeless and had
recently been discharged from a local hospital where he had been treated for an
undisclosed medical issue. There were no signs of suspicious activity at the
scene. The death appears to be from natural causes.

I thought hospital social workers reviewed and signed plan of action for patients when they are discharged. Or does this not apply to homeless people?
A genuine tragedy in Mason district. Penny Gross, none of your policies helped this poor soul. Time to retire and get someone who would help all our citizens, not just developers.
Truly a pathetic comment. As if any elected official should be responsible for all deaths. You might as well blame Barack Obama for focusing so much of his attention on the Iranians and the alleged epidemic of police brutality against innocent youths. Or blame Hillary and Bill Clinton for focusing on enriching themselves (Bill "has to pay their bills") by obtaining millions of dollars in foreign donations and paid speeches by Bill for favors Hillary gave while U.S. Secretary of State and in the future as President, instead of focusing on America's poor, homeless, mentally ill, etc…
If your sick mind wants to turn the death of a homeless man into a political attack, blame someone other than Penny Gross, who is focused on making certain Mason District's limited resources fund priorities for all the people instead of dedicating all the resources to the beck and call of the Fairfax County Public Schools and their Superintendent, Karen Garza, as the young inexperienced woman who is running against Supervisor Gross. This young inexperienced woman who works for the DC Public Schools, whose campaign platform for Mason District is more money for the public schools, No to new development, Yes, Yes, Yes to higher taxes.

Quite possibly the most offensive, disgusting, and dumb comment ever posted on this blog. A homeless man with a medical condition dies, and your immediately make it about Penny Gross?? How incredibly sick to make this a partisan political issue. You need help.
Whatever else you think about Penny Gross politically, she has long been actively involved in supporting community programs that serve the homeless and indigent in our county. With shelter, feeding programs, connecting them with social services, and working (against a tide of NIMBY-ism) to provide affordable housing options. Unfortunately, on this forum, some people are more interested in sticking with their preconceived notions than learning about what is actually going on in our community.
Thank you, 12:28 commenter. Our church in Seven Corners has hosted a day shelter one day per week year round, twice per week during the winter months, for nearly two decades. Penny Gross's engagement and support has helped ensure that not only do our visitors receive a hot meal and a safe place for several hours, but also access to health and other social services. It is in part due to her efforts that our Safe Haven program has continued to serve the community for so long. The homeless issue in Mason District and beyond is outside the control of any single official, but I have nothing but appreciation for Penny Gross's efforts to help us and others better serve that population.

Constructive Idea – Came up in conversation today. For homeless that can get back in society. Why can't one be a 6 month foster, a person serious about getting back in society? Program that screens and evaluates. Gathers cell phone, LinkedIn etc donations and works on placing them. That does tie into politics without blame.
It was very upsetting for my family to see this poor man's body barely covered with a white sheet as we returned home from Mother's Day brunch. Police should have respectfully covered his entire body. We all know Inova Fairfax Hospt. wastes no time in showing indigent people the door. Mason District has the highest crime rate in Fairfax. Leaves me wondering whether his death at age 66 was really due to "natural causes."
What do you mean by "highest crime rate?" Assaults? nope, Mt. Vernon. Homicides? nope. Kidnapping, sex offenses, crimes against poperty & society? nope, nope and nope. Stop being such a drama queen and do a bit of research.

Why would you wonder? Fairfax County Police have not hesitated to publicly call other recent deaths in Mason District homicides. But you want to imply there may be is an orchestrated, coordinated campaign by Fairfax County Police and the Coroner Office to knowingly undercount the number of homicides to hide from the public the frightening reality of how truly high is the increase in violent crime in Mason District?
What would be the point? Anyone who has been paying attention knows a rapid increase in violent crime is taking place in Mason District; regardless of whether this man's death was or was not a homicide. But I guess it makes you feel better to think Fairfax County Police are corrupt. Who are you? Reverend Al?

A homeless man loses his life and comments surface with political attacks and possible FCPD mis-reporting of cause of death. This is not the Mason Dist of years ago, so let's not think this is what we all feel. Wake up, neighbors! Get involved in your community assn., join a neighborhood watch and remember National Night Out on Tues, Aug 4th. Our FCPD needs all our support.
Apparently facts are no match for innuendo and fear. I'm sorry your family was upset by seeing this dead man. But that does not have anything to do with the crime rate in our district (which is shown to be quite low, your assertions notwithstanding).

None of us are insulated from being homeless one day. It doesn't take much in this country to lose ones life due to illness or financial woes. We are all one step away from such a turn of fate……even those nutty NIMBYs.
Sorry for that loss of life, maybe more crocuses will show up next year in his honor:-)
