Del. Kory to hold Town Hall Saturday morning
Annandale residents are encouraged to come to the first Town Hall meeting sponsored by our representative in the state House of Delegates, Kaye Kory. The meeting will be Saturday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Belvedere Elementary School on Columbia Pike. The session features special guest, Dick Saslaw, the majority Leader in the state Senate. Both Kory and Saslaw are Democrats.
Kory says, one of her highest priorities is “to inform and engage the citizens of the 38th District in the sometimes opaque legislative processes that unfold in Richmond.”
She was appointed to the Counties, Cities and Towns Committee and the Science and Technology Committee. A former member of the Fairfax County school board, Kory is disappointed about not being assigned to the Education Committee, but promises to be “be very active in the discussions and debates on education policies.
Legislation she introduced to raise the salaries of Virginia teachers was killed in subcommittee on a totally partisan vote, Kory reported in the Beltway on the James blog. “This bill is purely goal-setting without any financial commitments,” she said. “There was no clear reason to kill it—just a ‘we’ve spent enough time on this and she needs to go away.’ . . . Teachers’ salaries should not be a partisan issue!”
She also introduced a bill to further restrict the possession of guns on public school property and strongly supports an omnibus bill to reform Virginia’s conflict of interest statutes. It would create a single five-member Ethics Advisory Panel to review potential ethics violations by members of the legislature.
I understand that Delegate Kory would naturally be interested in education and legislation associated with it. However, there ar those of us with only tangential connections to tthe school system who are interested in issues beyond education such as services for the elderly or energy efficiency. I hope Delegate Kory is aware that education is nort the only issue of interest to the 38th District.
While Delegate Kory is, I'm sure, able to multi-task between education and all other issues pertaining to the 38th District, the fact that she scheduled this at the same time as the School Board is hosting the Budget Forum is annoying at best and shows a lack of awareness that is almost stunning, given her last job of School Board member. I would like to attend the Town hall but, alas, cloning is still illegal.
I don't think Kaye Kory ever cared about anyone, but herself. She won the election in November, but didn't resign until January. Since then, Mason has not had representation during this difficult budget process. She routinely showed up for meetings late and was irrelevant. She brags about Glasgow, but she didn't deliver Glasgow.
I am thrilled that she wasn't assigned to the Ed committee. Kaye was a big fish in Mason's pond. In Richmond, she is a nobody. She proposed a bill for teacher to get higher pay. The bill was a joke. It was poorly drafted and is the butt of jokes in Richmond to lawmakers. Piggybacking on Saslaw does nothing for her. Her dedicated fan base is shrinking and misguided.
I wish she would just do the folks of Mason a favor and go away.
