Del. Kaye Kory easily won re-election in the Democratic Primary June 8, with 61 percent of the vote, compared to 39 percent for challenger Holly Hazard. [Percentages are rounded.]
Kory has represented the 38th District in the House of Delegates since 2009. The 38th District includes a large chunk of the Annandale/Mason area.
Kory’s campaign raised $205,119, while Hazard raised $110,877.
In the 49th District, which includes part of Bailey’s Crossroads, Del. Alfonso Lopez handily beat Karishma Mehta 71 percent vs. 29 percent.
Terry McAuliffe easily won the race for governor, with 62 percent of the vote. Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy of Prince William County came in second with 20 percent, following by Sen. Jennifer McClellan of Richmond (12 percent), Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (4 percent), and Del. Lee Carter of Manassas (3 percent).
The Virginia Republican Party didn’t hold a primary and instead selected Glenn Youngkin, a former private equity executive, at an “unassembled convention” in May. Youngkin has already poured $12 million into his campaign, while McAuliffe is known for his strong fundraising skills. Princess Blanding, whose brother was killed by police during a mental health crisis, is also running.
In his victory speech, McAuliffe attacked Youngkin as a far-right extremist with close ties to former President Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz.
McAuliffe did even better in Fairfax County, getting 64 percent of the vote. Here’s how the other candidates fared in Fairfax County: Foy (19 percent), McClellan (10 percent), Carter (3 percent), and Fairfax (3 percent).
McAuliffe, who was governor 2014-18, would become the second Virginia governor since the Civil War to serve two terms. The state prohibits a governor from serving two consecutive terms.
Haya Ayala, who represents Prince William County in the House of Delegates, won the primary for lieutenant governor with 37 percent of the vote.
Ayala beat six other candidates: Del. Sam Rasoul of Roanoke (24 percent), Norfolk City Council member Andria McClellan (11 percent), Del. Mark Levine of Alexandria (11 percent), Fairfax County NAACP President Sean Perryman (8 percent), and sports agent Xavier Warren (4 percent).
The vote in Fairfax County was a bit different: Ayala (34 percent), Rasoul (28 percent), Levine (14 percent), Perryman (10 percent), McClellan (7 percent), and Warren (2 percent).
Ayala will face Republican candidate Winsome Sears, a former delegate from Norfolk, in November.
For attorney general, the incumbent, Mark Herring was declared the winner with 56 percent of the vote, beating Del. Jerrauld “Jay” Jones of Norfolk with 44 percent.
The Republicans chose Del. Jason Miyares from Virginia Beach to run for attorney general.
Kaye also represents part of Braddock District.
