A fire at a single-family house in the 4500 block of Banff Street in Annandale on New Year’s Eve claimed the life of a family dog, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports.

When firefighters arrived shortly after 5 p.m., they found a fire in the basement and a deceased dog. Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental in nature and was caused by an electrical event in a receptacle in the basement kitchen.

A homeowner had arrived home to find smoke coming from the basement. The homeowner alerted the three other occupants at home at the time and all got out before the firetrucks arrived. There were no working smoke alarms in the house.

Damages from the fire are estimated at $93,750. The occupants declined an offer of assistance from the Red Cross.

The firefighters and paramedics of the FCFRD remind residents that working smoke alarms save lives.

  1. Shame on them for not getting the poor dog out! It would be different it happened when nobody was there and it would have been an accidental tragedy – it's terrible to think at least three people were there and they did not save the poor dog.
