Elderly man found dead after house fire

An elderly was found dead after a fire was extinguished in his home at 4904 Columbia Road in Annandale Jan. 1. The victim was identified as Lewis C. Spessard, age 94.

According to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, smoke was showing from the one-story single-family home when fire units arrived at 4:20 a.m.

A third-party caller knew the man was inside and could be in trouble, WTOP reports. About 20 to 30 fire trucks responded, including units from Alexandria. An investigation of how the fire started is under way.
