Electric vehicle charging station under construction at Seven Corners Target

Six electric vehicle charging stations are being installed in the Target parking lot on Arlington Boulevard in Seven Corners. They are expected to be fully operational by the end of June.

The stations are part of an electric vehicle charging network owned and managed by Electrify America, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group of America. VW created Electrify America with $2 billion it agreed to pay as part of the 2016 emissions scam settlement with U.S. and California regulators.

VW settlement funds are also supporting a network of 80 to 100 EVgo charging stations in Virginia, including one to be installed at Barcroft Plaza on Columbia Pike.

Most of the charging stations at the Seven Corners Target have CCS chargers providing up to 150 kilowatts. With those chargers, it should take about 30 minutes for a 300-mile range – just enough time for a shopping stop at Target. There’s also a CHAdeMo charger that provides 50 kw for cars that can’t handle faster chargers.

Electrify America, based in Reston, hopes to have hundreds of charging stations in place by the end of the year, CNBC reports. Most will be in California and in East Coast areas where there are concentrations of electric vehicles. Currently, 160 are up and running. The settlement requires Volkswagen to spend the $2 billion by the end of 2026.

The company has formed partnerships with Target, Walmart, and other retailers. There’s another Electrify America station under construction at the Walmart on Route 1 in Alexandria.

    2. I was wondering the same thing. Along those lines, I wonder, too, what the source of the power us for mining the lithium needed to make the the rechargeable batteries.

  1. Very cool, I was wondering what they were working on in the Target parking lot. I wonder what they will do to keep internal combustion cars from parking in those spaces.

  2. Please ensure that you know your facts: The power for these charging stations is sourced from Dominion Virginia power, just like your home and all of the businesses in Virginia. You can look up the mix of resources used by Virginia Power on their website. https://www.dominionenergy.com/company/making-energy

The technology is available for solar power charging stations but these are not powered by solar.
