Elikeh turns up the heat at Annandale’s Ossian Hall Park

The sounds of Afrofunk, as interpreted by the band Elikeh, reverberated throughout Ossian Hall
Park in Annandale Saturday evening.
The D.C.-based band blends Afropop, traditional West African
rhythms, funk, and jazz. Elikeh’s leader, Serge Massama Dogo (lead vocals and guitar),
was born and raised in Togo. The other band members—on bass, drums, two saxes,
keyboards, trumpet, and percussion—are from California, New York, Nigeria,
Maryland, and Benin.

On Aug. 24, Elikeh is having a release party for its new
album, “Between 2 Worlds,” at the Black Cat in D.C. The group’s previous albums are “Adje! Adje!”
(2010) and “Nyade” (2006).
The Elikeh show was part of the Spotlight by Starlight
series, presented by Friends of Mason District Park. The last event of the
summer at Ossian Hall Park will be Peruvian cultural night on Aug. 25.
Several more Spotlight by Starlight events are scheduled
through the end of August at Mason District Park. See the community calendar (on the right-hand column) for details.
