Fairfax Choral Society is holding auditions for young singers
The Master Singers, a teen choir of the Fairfax Choral Society |
Got a child who loves to sing? The Annandale-based Fairfax Choral Society (FCS) is holding auditions Jan. 7, 14, and 21 by appointment.
The auditions are open to singers age 5 through high school. Children ages 5 to 10 need only a “voice check” so they can be placed in the right group, not a full audition. To schedule an audition or voice check, contact Susan McGuire, FCS director of operations, 703/642-3277.
The FCS office, at the Packard Center, 4028 Hummer Road at
Annandale Community Park, is closed for the holidays and
will reopen Jan. 3.
The auditions will take place at the Annandale United Methodist Church (AUMC), 6935 Columbia Pike, Annandale. The youth choruses rehearse and perform at AUMC, too. Rehearsals are Monday evenings.
The Da Capo Choir |
There are several youth choral groups: the Da Capo Choir (ages 5-8), Lyric Choir (ages 7-10) Treble Choir (ages 9-13), Concert Choir (ages 9-15), and Master Singers (ages 13-18).
Youths over 10 who want to audition need to prepare a short song (anything from a hymn to a pop song) that shows off their voice and personality. Singers should be able to match pitch, sing without accompaniment, demonstrate tonal memory and rhythmic aptitude, and read simple melodies from a staff and hand signs. For more information, visit the auditions section on the FCS website.
The FCS also offers musicianship classes at AUMC, including classes on Early Childhood Music for ages 3 to 5 and Music Theory to help high school students prepare for the Advanced Placement exam.
The FCS’s 120-member Adult Chorus performs throughout the Washington, D.C., region and has toured in Europe.
