Fairfax Connector to resume service Friday
Fairfax Connector buses will start running again on Friday, March 8, following the approval of a contract between Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 and Transdev. Service remains suspended today.
Connector buses have been out of service since more than 650 bus drivers and maintenance workers went on strike on Feb. 22 to protest unfair labor practices.
According to ATU 689, union members overwhelmingly ratified a contract with Transdev on March 6 that addresses their demands for fair pay and strong benefits.

Transdev operates the Fairfax Connector system under a contract with the Fairfax County government. The largest local bus system in Northern Virginia, Fairfax Connector serves 26,000 passengers a day, many of whom struggled to find alternative transportation during the 15-day strike.
“Local 689 was able to win transformative improvements to the contract that will guarantee retirement security for members, include competitive wages for bus operators and mechanics, and enhance the 40-hour guarantee, among other key union priorities,” ATU 689 states.
“Our members stood shoulder to shoulder throughout this ordeal,” said Local 689 President/Business Agent Ray Jackson. “Transdev tried to divide us. This strike showed that our members are willing to lay it all on the line for dignity and justice.”
“I am proud of our Fairfax Connector members who were willing to go to the mat to fight for a contract with living wages and strong benefits,” said ATU International President John Costa, who joined workers on the picket lines and at a rally outside the contract negotiations.
“The result was a strong contract that recognizes the commitment and dedication of these frontline heroes to provide safe and reliable transportation for our riders who rely on Fairfax Connector,” Costa said. “Our members now have a pathway to the middle class for the essential public service they provide.”
Thanks
Great news, what a relief, lots of us were having problems going to work and getting back home, thank you.
Well done, local 689. Collective bargaining works, people.
I’ve ridden 4 times since yesterday. 2 drivers had serious negative attitudes toward the customers. I was almost passed at the stop tonight and told “it would help if I held up a flashlight”. Driving has been fast with lurchy stops. Not one iota of remorse from the company or its employees for putting 26,000 riders per day for 15 days in a very difficult situation. If I were in charge, I would have made fares free for the first week/day back. Good luck with any attempt at improving customer service. If you’re at a stop at night, make sure you hold up your cell phone light or it will be your fault if the bus driver passes you by. Disgraceful company, TransDev.
