Fairfax County Police Department wins annual Annandale Bed Race

Annandale residents should feel safer knowing that our police officers are fit and healthy enough to beat 32 other teams in pushing a hospital bed up and down John Marr Drive. The Fairfax Police Department won the annual Bed Race, an Annandale annual tradition, on Saturday morning. A team from Magill’s restaurant was the second-place winner, and Silverado’s restaurant, the defending champion, came in third.

The event, sponsored by the Annandale Chamber of Commerce, was expected to raise about $8,000, beating last year’s haul of $6,500. Half of the money raised will go to the Special Olympics; the rest goes to the Chamber.

Rep. Gerry Connolly, running for re-election in the 11th district, handed out the prizes, including honors to a team from the Arlington Sheriff’s Office for raising the most money ($940). Students from the Hapmudo studio, which also had a bed in the race, gave a martial arts demonstration.

Other bed racers represented the American Legion, Beanetics (sponsoring Connolly), Burger King (sponsoring Fairfax County Supervisor John Cook), Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Fairfax County Professional Firefighters & Paramedics Local 2068, Giant, Home Instead/Annandale Shopping Center (sponsoring Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova), Navy Credit Union, Reithoffer Shows, and Trust Properties (sponsoring Supervisor Penny Gross).
