Fairfax County recommends masks indoors for all, including people fully vaccinated
Due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, the Fairfax County Health Department recommends that everyone wear a mask in public settings, including people fully vaccinated.
That recommendation is based on updated guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week.
The Fairfax Health District has moved from a moderate level of COVID transmission to substantial transmission.
The Health Department urges everyone age 12 and over to get a vaccination. “Despite some breakthrough cases, vaccination remains the most important approach to prevent COVID-19 and particularly to prevent more severe infection,” it states. Vaccinations are free, and appointments are not needed.

In addition to wearing masks indoors and getting vaccinated, the Health Department urges people to also practice these strategies to prevent the spread of COVID:
- Stay home when you’re ill except to get tested or see a healthcare provider.
- Maintain six feet physical distancing from others.
- Practice good handwashing.
- Get tested if symptomatic or if you spent time with some who is sick or tested positive for COVID.
- Follow Health Department recommendations for isolation and quarantine if you are infected or are a close contact of an infected person.
