Farewell, Quizno’s

Quizno’s has closed. [Bob Kovacs]

Quizno’s Subs, the sandwich shop at 7042 Columbia Pike, Annandale, has closed for good.

Here is the full text of a note on the door from the Kim family:

“To our loving and loyal customers: After over a decade, we are closing our doors on Saturday, November 27, 2019.

“While some of you were aware that we were wrapping up, we regret that we were unable to say ‘thank you’ to every single person ahead of wrapping up.

“With many changes in our family, this was the only time where we were able finally put things in motion to close this chapter of our lives. Since we opened in 2006, we have grown alongside this community and will never forget the wonderful memories we were able to share with you, your businesses, and your families. You gave us a chance to serve you, and we loved getting to know you, serving you, laughing, crying, sharing stories and memories, celebrating big moments, bearing through the tough ones; we watched members of this community grow up, add new members to the family, move away, leave – and everything in between.
“From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you and will be thinking fondly of all the moments and connections you have so graciously shared with us. Many thanks also goes to the Annandale Shopping Center who have been a wonderful home and host for our small business – we hope that our customers will continue supporting this wonderful shopping center and its businesses.
“In this season of giving and thanks, once again thank you all for giving us the opportunity to be a part of your lives. We will miss you and hope to see you around the neighborhood.”

We don’t know if the closure of the store has anything to do with the troubled Quizno’s brand. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2014. The private equity firm High Bluff Capital bought Quizno’s and Taco Del Mar in 2018 and formed Rego Restaurant Group with plans to fix those brands and acquire additional chains in need of a turnaround.

According to a March 2019 report in Restaurant Business magazine, the “Quizno’s has suffered a collapse on a scale that is unprecedented in the restaurant business. It has less than 400 locations in the U.S. right now. In 2007 it had nearly 5,000. The chain suffered from an ugly combination of weak operators, a bad business model, way too much debt, and a really big competitor in Subway.”

The only Quizno’s left in Northern Virginia is in Lorton.

  1. I remember when this place first opened, back when I was in HS. Me and my friends were all excited "Ooohh, they toast the bread!". When it first opened up, it was so good, it was way better than Subway. Good quality meats, bread, and a nice selection of condiments. I think trying to compete with Subway really did them in. There was a noticeable drop in quality when they tried to compete with Subway on their $5 footlong promotions. Their products were terrible too, the "Torpedo" which advertised as 13 inch, was super thin to try and compensate, more like a breadstick made into a sandwich. I'll miss Quiznos since it has been a part of Annandale, but I can't say I ever really ate there, maybe twice in the last 3 years. There hasn't been much turnover in that plaza, I wonder what will open next.
