FCPS announces application process for world language immersion programs

Online registration
for Fairfax County Public Schools’ lottery for world language immersion programs will open on Monday, Jan. 27.
Students currently in
prekindergarten may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current
kindergarten students may apply for the first-grade immersion programs for the
2020-21 school year.

Kindergarten and
first-grade immersion programs are available in several languages at several
schools, including Spanish at Bailey’s Elementary School in Bailey’s
Crossroads.

that program are invited to a meeting at Bailey’s ES on Feb. 3, 6:30

Ravensworth Elementary School in North Springfield offers a Spanish immersion program for first-graders.

Students in immersion
programs spend approximately half of each day learning mathematics, science,
and health, as well as a portion of language arts, in the target language. The
other half of the day is spent learning social studies, language arts, and family
life education in English.

Students can apply to any school in Fairfax County with an immersion program but transportation will not be provided for students residing outside the immersion school’s attendance area. There is a fee of $100 for students accessing immersion program placements outside of their base school.
Parents must apply online by 4
p.m. on Feb. 20 for the first-grade immersion program and by 4 p.m. on March 20
for the kindergarten immersion program.

Applicants will be entered
in a lottery. The results will be communicated to parents via email on March 5 for the first-grade immersion program and on April 2 for the kindergarten
