FCPS holds public meeting on proposed charter school

The public is invited to a meeting on the charter school application submitted by the
founders of the Fairfax Leadership Academy (FLA).
The meeting will take place Tuesday, June 12, 7:30 p.m., at the Gatehouse Center, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church. It will cover the objectives and
instructional approach of the proposed charter school, its operations,
and its financial
arrangements.
The
Virginia Board of Education approved the FLA proposal April 25. The
application was submitted to FCPS May 30. It will be reviewed by FCPS staff
during the summer. The school board will hold a public hearing on the FLA Oct.
9 and will vote on it Oct. 25.

The application states the FLA will serve grades 7-12 in a small learning community with an intensive college prep curriculum targeted to at-risk students. It would have longer school hours, a full-year calendar, and a focus on career education and leadership development. It would have an innovative staffing structure with teachers serving as student advisers and administrators teaching classes.

Parents and educators in the Falls Church High School community have expressed concerns that the charter school would have a negative impact on FCHS and organized a petition drive against it. Meanwhile, FLA founder Eric Welch has been speaking at community meetings to drum up support for the school.

One response to “FCPS holds public meeting on proposed charter school

  1. The FLA is pushing the school system to accept their plan that has not completed enough review to demonstrate where the school should be located and how it will impact neighboring schools. FCHS has the best performance of the county schools for "at risk" students. FLA should not be located at their proposed site. Please sign the petition to oppose their approval by the SB.http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/support_fchs/
