The Fairfax County Park Authority is proposing fee changes
for some park facilities. Some fees will increase, while others will actually be
reduced.
for some park facilities. Some fees will increase, while others will actually be
reduced.
According to a report by the Park Authority, the changes are
based on several trends: On the down side, use of the county’s golf courses has
declined due to the sluggish economy and poor weather, and there’s been a
drop-off in RECenter attendance. Positive
trends include record growth in the number of households purchasing park
services and growth in sales of RECenter passes.

Here’s how the
proposed fees would affect residents of Annandale/Mason District:
proposed fees would affect residents of Annandale/Mason District:
- In-season (mid-March
through mid-December) weekend greens fees for the nine-hole Pinecrest Golf Course on Little River Turnpike would rise from $22 to $23. The in-season weekday fee at Pinecrest would
not change from the current $18.
- The off-season (mid-December through mid-March) weekend and
weekday greens fees at Pinecrest would not change from the current rate of $18.
Fees for renting accessible power carts at Pinecrest would increase from $8 to
$10.
- The Park Authority recommends
reducing the fee for renting the Wakefield Skatepark in Annandale from $250 to $80. New fees
are added renting part of the skatepark: $80 for the ramp
section and $35 for the plaza section. This proposal is
being made because the current rental rates are significantly higher than at other
skateparks in the area, and the Wakefield facility has only been rented twice since 2011.
- There would be a fee
of $8 for one hour of singles play at
the tennis courts at Wakefield, and the separate fee structure for county
residents and non-residents would be eliminated. The current rate is $7 for
residents and $11 for non-residents.
- The rate for doubles
and for tournaments and groups at the Wakefield tennis courts would be $10 for
one and a-half hours. It’s now $9 for residents and $14 for non-residents.
- The fees for groups renting all or parts of RECenter swimming
pools would increase by 4.8 percent.
- Room rentals at the Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Annandale would increase from $50 to $55 an hour.
- The fee for renting the
new classroom at Green Spring Gardens would be $55 an hour plus a $50 security
deposit. Renting the multipurpose room at Green Spring would remain $90 an hour
but a new lower rate of $70 an hour would be in effect for non-prime hours (Monday
through Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
The Park Authority Board will vote on the fee changes at its March 12 meeting. If approved, they will take effect April 1.
The public can submit feedback on the proposed changes at a meeting scheduled for Jan. 29, 7 p.m., in the Herrity Building, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. To register to speak, contact Judy Pedersen, 703-324-8662. Comments can also be submitted via email until Feb. 11.
