Fire at Evergreen House was arson

arson, says Capt. Randy Bittinger, spokesperson for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
A woman set the bedding on fire in the bedroom in an
apartment on the top floor of the six-story building. She was arrested on the
scene for burning or destroying an occupied dwelling and is being held in the
Adult Detention Center, Bittinger said. He doesn’t know if she lives in Evergreen
House, an independent-living residence for seniors at 6925 Columbia Pike.
One civilian and one firefighter suffered minor injuries.
They were treated in the hospital and released. Only one person – the occupant of the burned
apartment – was displaced. Damage is estimated at
$30,000. Smoke alarms and sprinklers were activated.
An observer counted about 15 fire vehicles at the scene at
about 11 p.m. Whenever there’s a fire at a residential high rise, it’s an
automatic two-alarm fire, Bittinger said, so there’s going to be a big
response.
The fire department was extremely busy last night during the
thunderstorm, responding to a slew of emergencies, including power outages
caused by falling trees.
How horrid. What is wrong with people?
Also, yet another senior home in our midst that I didn't even know about. I am officially surrounded on all sides by senior homes. This hardly seems like a fair and equitable distribution of senior homes throughout the county.
Evergreen House has been in Annandale since 1980. Are seniors not allowed to "live in your midst"? Haven't you ever had a senior family member?
Anonymous. Be careful. One day you just may find yourself as a senior. Many of the senior homes have been around for 40+ years. For the most part, many of the have been a part of the community for much longer than you've probably been alive, judging from your comment.
Previous poster – I have lived all over Northern Virginia, and never have I seen such a concentrated pocket of senior homes as I have in the radius surrounding my house. It is really not feasible to improve a district when it is so heavily populated by senior apartments and boarding homes, as much as the rest of us try.
Correct! Bingo – which is why Penny Gross makes sure they are all located here so she can stay in office by "some no all" uninformed blue hairs.
There are senior homes all over Northern Virginia, most along main roads for good public transportation. Get over it.
