Fire breaks out in storage unit

A two-alarm fire broke out in a self-storage facility in the 6880 Commercial Drive, Springfield, just before 7 a.m. on May 27, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports.

The fire originated in one storage unit and spread to a whole row of garage-style units at Backlick Storage operated by Storage Partners. A passerby smelled smoke in the area, saw the fire, and called 911. Fire crews from the City of Alexandria and Fort Belvoir joined Fairfax County firefighters in attacking the blaze. Damage is estimated at $133,911. The cause is under investigation. No one was injured.
