Fire damages Annandale home
UPDATED 6/14/22: A single-family home at 3901 Terrace Drive in the Broyhill Crest neighborhood of Annandale suffered major damage in a fire this morning.
The occupants all made it outside safely and were able to rescue a few important items. There were no pets in the home.
Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental and started on the exterior deck. The fire was caused by an electrical event involving outdoor string lights.
Fire trucks from the Annandale Fire Station arrived shortly after 3 a.m., and units from the Edsall Road Fire Station responded later.
Seven occupants were home at the time of the fire. One occupant woke up, discovered the fire, and notified the other occupants. Smoke alarms had been disabled due to missing batteries. One occupant sustained a minor injury but refused treatment. The residents accepted assistance from the Red Cross.
Damages are estimated at $125,000.
This was very nearly more than a property loss and all those with this style house (like me!) should consider the vulnerability of the generous roof overhangs and the wide open attic. This started outside and within minutes the whole attic was choked with smoke and the fire was advancing uninhibited. Be careful what you do and what you store under those eaves and check those smoke detectors regularly. Great job by FCFR to account for everyone, knock down the fire and vent the roof.
