UPDATED March 22: There was a fire at Edy’s Chicken & Steak Restaurant at 5240 Leesburg Pike, near the Skyline Center in Bailey’s Crossroads this morning. The fire started at about 11 a.m. on the roof. No one was injured, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports.

According to a witness, there was extensive property damage, the restaurant is likely to be closed for about three months, and workers are worried about losing their jobs at a time when they’re already struggling economically during the coronavirus pandemic. Edy’s specializes in Peruvian cuisine and had been open for carryout and delivery only.
Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental in nature and started in the plenum space. It was caused by heat escaping from duct work that was over a commercial charcoal cooking appliance, which ignited the nearby roof assembly and parapet wall. Damages were approximately $350,000.
Eight employees were in the restaurant at the time of the fire. An employee was alerted to the fire when he noticed an exhaust fan was not working. There were working smoke alarms present, but they did not sound due to the location of the fire.
