Fire damages house in Annandale

Updated 6/14: A fire at a house in the 6900 block of Alpine Drive in Annandale at about 12:40 p.m. on June 13 caused extensive damage. The two occupants safely evacuated, but a cat perished in the fire.

Investigators from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department determined the fire was started in a bedroom and was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. Home oxygen equipment contributed to the extent of the fire. Damages were estimated at $155,000.

One occupant noticed flames in the bedroom and called 911. Smoke alarms were present and sounded after the fire was discovered.
