Fire destroys apartment in Lincolnia
A fire at the Morningside Apartments in Lincolnia Sunday

One adult female with minor burns was transported to the Burn
Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Two adult females were taken to Inova
Alexandria Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, said Deputy Chief James
Walsh with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

Fire and rescue units responded at approximately 2 p.m. to a fire in a garden-style apartment is at 4903 Zircon Drive near the
intersection of Beauregard Street and Little River Turnpike. More than 25 fire
and EMS vehicles and 70 firefighters were on the scene from the Fairfax and Alexandria fire
departments. Firefighters made two ladder rescues from two balconies on separate floors.

All residents of the affected building were temporarily
evacuated until Dominion Power and Washington Gas could restore utilities.

Three dogs were rescued – a bulldog, chihuahua, and a Yorkie, said Capt. I. Randal Bittinger. A firefighter threw one of the smaller
dogs from the third-floor terrace to another firefighter on the ground.
The manager of the Morningside Apartments was trying to find
vacant apartments for the displaced residents. The Red Cross is also providing
shelter.

UPDATE: The fire was intentionally set, investigators with the Fairfax County Fire Department reported Jan. 5. Damage is estimated at $520,000.

When I lived in a condo, I was slightly terrified of the things that the people I shared walls with could do. How awful. I hope someone gets prosecuted.
