Firefighters might hold training exercise at Lacey Center
If you see a bunch of firefighters and police officers swarming all over the Lacey Center this summer, don’t freak out; it’s probably just a training exercise.
Before the Lacey Center is demolished—in preparation for building a new elementary school on that site—the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Academy might want to use the building to teach firefighting skills to trainees, says Scott Kraut, captain of field training. The building would not be burned down, but future firefighters would practice such skills as pulling hose lines through the building and rescuing manikins. The police might participate, too, Kraut says, possibly staging a training exercise to prepare for a school hostage situation.
Once a training exercise is scheduled, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and local homeowners association would be informed.
The Lacey Center, located in the Broyhill Crest neighborhood off Gallows Road in Annandale, has been vacated by the Fairfax County Public Schools employees who had worked there. The new school is expected to open in September 2012.
All excellent ideas…just don't let them interfere with the ability to have the school open on time (does not look as if it will).
Have they come up with the new temporary voting site during construction?
Is there any update with the 'traffic calming' status of Wayne?
It is off of Annandale Road, not Gallows Road.
Given age of building does it have asbestos and wouldn't burning it be unsafe for the environment?
You're right about the asbestos. That's one reason it has to be torn down. The building won't be burned; it will be used for practicing rescues and things like that.
